I haven't been able to reproduce the problem wither; my guess would
be that it's peculiar to Meadow.

This is just a problem with the program as i coded it: I simply
copied the beta-code strings unprocessed into the variables that I
passed through to emacs. The "&1", etc., is as you surmised beta
code Latin-font changes. The same thing happens in a works-list buffer
(open Aristotle = tlg0086.idt and you'll see the title of the Constitution
of Athens in raw beta code). I have to fix this.
Getting Greek in the mode line would be nice; I don't know if it's
possible (but Takahashi probably does).
