I trust this thread is aware of the Perl program Diogenes, which has
several years of development behind it and is available on any machine
with a Perl interpreter at level 5.1 or above.  I have 5.6.1 on a Mac
but I confess I have not actually tried to use it.  Mac OSX should have 
no trouble.  Diogenes does all the things you seem to want, and does them
blazingly fast.  (If you are a perl hacker, you can even custormize it.)

I would urge development in cooperation with Heslin, rather than
going at it independently.  He is very cooperative.
